Proposals for accessible community college: Better solutions to further educated citizens.
- Background & Problem statement
It is amazing to look into how nice it would be to have community college be free. This proposal caught the attention of many students. However, this is not as easy as it seems. Where this money would come from is the biggest issue. We know that this would come out of our taxes, not only would they increase, but a smaller percent of taxes would go to other government funded programs. Reading the article “Obama, free community college may not work” by Michael B. Horn on CNN wire, it opened up a very big point in the lack of money for “innovative educational programs designed to help students succeed in the workforce”. In other words the financial help coming in at the moment for programs to help students gain necessary work skills, would decrease. Perhaps handing all these students free passes to community college would do more damage than help the situation. This what i want to further analyze.
III. Objectives & Research Questions
I strongly believe in giving the youth better accessibility to education beyond high school. My goal for this paper is to further look into the proposal made by Obama - and several senators - for free community college. Analyze all opposing views and find different solutions to encourage high school students to choose education over working after receiving their GED. Finding answers to this research could help many individuals further pursue their career. Questions that i want to answer include:
- When did this idea arise?
- Find average value of associate's degree
- What is the advantage of having an associates rather than not?
- How many people pay off their loans?
- Reasons why high schoolers don’t continue their education?
- How many people drop out because of the inability to pay off tuition?
- Average years that it takes to pay off further education?
- Cost of a university vs. community college?
- Look into tax use for Obama’s Proposal
- How many people choose work over school?
- What are the scholarships funds that are already established?
- Are people taking advantage of scholarships already available ?
IV. Methodology
My biggest ally for this project will be databases like “opposing views” where i can get as much information as possible about both sides of this controversial topic. For this paper i need very accurate information that will give me a strong voice. I anticipate to use Ethos and Logos to persuade my audience. I would like to inform my reader in a very organized manner.
With this topic i find myself in a difficult situation where i would like to flat out side with Obama’s proposal. However, based on my initial research i feel that this would be too much of a stretch. It would be wonderful to be able to promise free community college, but we may not be able to go through with the millions of dollars it requires in order to work. My biggest challenge will be to find the right information and be able to build up a realistic plan for my call to action.
- Expected outcomes, significance or rationale + agency
My proposal has to do with human ethics. The better education of our country should be in the best interest of us all. Not enough students graduate with the desire to continue school. Many worry a lot more about getting bills paid and all the expenses that come with entering adulthood. This is very reasonable, but an associate's degree can really make a difference in someone’s life. Unfortunately community college expenses still fall out of people’s reach. However handing over free passes to college may not be the answer. My expected outcome is to bring a new idea to the table, one that will eventually encourage more students to pursue education after receiving their high school diploma.
